Drug Discovery to Clinical Care

Boston Campus Program—July 7-19, 2024

Exploring Pharmacy and the Pharmaceutical Sciences

Through this two-week interactive experience, students will gain insights into the life cycle of medications, from the drug discovery and development process to their use in humans. Anticipated activities include: engaging with researchers and drug manufacturers, visiting their facilities, and participating in hand-on activities related to medication compounding. Additionally, students will learn about many of the important aspects related to medication use, including the history, therapeutic and toxicologic aspects, as well as delivery to the patient.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to:

Acquire knowledge and experience in pharmaceutical and clinical research.

Observing and engaging within the drug-discovery and delivery processes will allow students to gain insights into the various ways pharmacists aid in the medication use process. 

Develop real-world skills applicable to pharmacy when providing patient care.

Completing various training experiences such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), laboratory safety and basic research design, will allow students to gain insights into how their work impacts patient lives. 

Explore various pathways for future pharmacists and researchers.

Engaging directly with pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists will allow students to learn about the numerous roles, responsibilities, and pathways that are available to pharmacists, including the patient care, clinical research, biotechnology, and drug discovery/development. 

Grow interpersonal and team-building skills.

Conducting a variety of hands-on activities will allow students to gain experience and build confidence and competence across a spectrum of pharmacy-specific activities.
